When You Meet the Mammalian Diving Reflex

By Gigi Goodwin. 2023.©

Open the floodgates to a body of water so strong it could crush you if you dive deep enough.

Use the weapons of utter destruction in an everyday form, as though they are harmless.

You will feel the Mammalian Diving Reflex from the reassurance of safety and comfort of your own desk.

The restless waters will always exist in your mind, but it is your decision whether to try to guide yourself or be carried by them.

As murky as a fog above water, pull yourself into focus as many times as you need.

Choose not to slip into a daze as ignition fires up in you, time and again.

Hold onto the moment of calm you feel now, with two fingers, and do not move anything but your hand and wrist.

Be lifted by the music, until you are immersed in cool water over every surface of your skin and pressure lifted from your muscles; your heart is slow and you are weightless.

You are submerged in the ocean waters, sometimes a merciless thing, but controlled by your hands in this moment.

Even though the spark of the fires inside gratify you while they burn, you must redirect the oxygen from the fire to your crucial systems, and let the fire burn itself out.

You will find out who you are without it. Only then can you write your story and mean it.

Fire isn't meant to burn forever, only in a time of survival.

A fuel without sparks or an open flame, removed from the fire and heat, may feel powerless, but really it has just been saved from self-destruction.
