How Deep?

            How deep are the feelings that keep you submerged longer than you can breathe?

                                 that make you feel like you don’t need to gasp for air

                                               the waves crashing, distant above

                                                         you don’t hear them

                                                          deprived of oxygen

                                 ignoring your body’s screams to escape to the surface

                                                         the pressure crushing

                                                             so deep, so heavy

                                                     the water is dark down here

                                                         and it is black below me

                                                            I can’t see my feet
